Chinese authorities stop the Kosovar play "Yue Madeleine Yue"

The Chinese authorities have prevented the participation of the Qendra Multimedia theatre troup, in the 7th edition of the Shanghai International Experimental Theatre Festival (SIETF), which is being organized by the Shanghai Theatre Academy (STA), and which is being held from October 10-18, 2013. The Qendra Multimedia was invited to participate in the festival with the political performance "Yue Madeleine Yue" written by Jeton Neziraj, which had its premiere on February 24 2012, at the Volkstheater in Vienna.

The "Yue Madeleine Yue" theatre team should have traveled to Shanghai on October 10, where they were scheduled to give three performances during the SIETF festival. The Chinese authorities had granted visas for the Kosovar group, but then, three days later, they cancelled the visas without giving any reason. Kosova citizens are granted visas for China, but even so, the "Yue Madeleine Yue" theatre group have not been given visas.

The Qendra Multimedia expresses its consternation at the arbitrary decision made by the Chinese authorities, which naturally has political connotations. Censorship is unacceptable and it only serves to deepen the existing gaps between different peoples and cultures of the world.

The Qendra Multimedia also calls on the official authorities in Belgrade to stop the primitive intimidation it uses in order to prevent Kosovar artists, whenever and wherever possible, from participating in international cultural events.

"Yue Madeleine Yue" is a political play about the unwanted Roma in Europe. As well as Vienna, "Yue…" has been performed in Germany, Croatia, Serbia and Kosova.
